01Our aim
Transitions Lab wants Moto Zero to be usable by as many people as possible, including people who use a screen reader, a keyboard, magnification or a slow connection, and people who read English as a second language. We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at level AA. The site has not been formally audited, so we describe it as partially conformant.
02What we have done
- Text alternatives: photos, plates and renders have descriptive alt text; decorative images are hidden from screen readers; diagrams have a written explanation in the text around them.
- Structure: pages use headings, landmarks and lists, so that screen readers can jump through them, and long pages have an "On this page" list.
- Keyboard: menus, buttons, quizzes, form fields and most interactive figures can be used with the keyboard, with a visible focus outline.
- Contrast and text: dark text on light backgrounds with strong contrast; text can be enlarged to 200% and the layout adapts to phones without sideways scrolling.
- Motion: animations calm down when your system asks for reduced motion; videos play only when you press play.
- Listen: the Listen button reads a page aloud with your browser's own voices.
- Language picker: any page can be translated into 16 other languages, including Kiswahili, Hindi and Arabic (machine translation by Google).
- No account needed: everything can be read and used without signing in; forms have labels and clear error messages.
03Known limitations
- 3D views: the 3D models and the Overview, Cockpit and builder scenes are visual and depend on a mouse, touch or keyboard gestures. They are not fully usable with a screen reader. The same information is given in the course text, the part pages and the course plates.
- Interactive figures and games: some drag-and-drop tools, such as the bike builder, the Kids game and parts of the Wiring Lab and Circuit Builder, are hard to use without a pointer.
- Machine translation: translated pages can contain mistakes and may read awkwardly; the English page is the original.
- Third-party content: embedded YouTube videos and their captions are provided by their creators and YouTube; not all have accurate captions.
- PDF downloads: the course PDFs may not be fully tagged for screen readers. The same content is available as web pages.
