The choke lever on the handlebar moves but the cold engine will not start any better, or the lever is stiff, will not stay in position, or the engine runs rich and idles high even with the choke off. This page covers the lever and cable. If the cable is fine but the starter plunger or flap in the carburettor sticks, see Choke is stuck on or will not work.
Fuel-injected bikes have no choke: hard cold starting on those is covered by Hard to start when the engine is cold.
Is it safe to ride?
Yes, with care, if the engine runs normally. A choke stuck ON makes the engine run rich, foul the plug and use more fuel; fix it soon.
Quick checks first
- Does the bike have a choke lever on the bar, a knob on the carburettor, or an automatic choke?
- Move the lever: does it feel connected, or loose with no resistance?
- When warm with the choke OFF, is the idle high or does the exhaust smell rich?
- Look at the cable end at the carburettor: is it attached?
Diagnose it step by step
1Move the lever. Does the cable inner move at the carburettor end?
- No: the cable is broken or has come off the lever or carburettor. Reconnect it, or replace it if broken. Then Adjust the choke cable.
- Yes: go to step 2.
2With the lever fully ON, does the plunger lift fully (or the flap close fully)?
- No: too much slack. Adjust (Adjust the choke cable).
- Yes: go to step 3.
3With the lever fully OFF, is the plunger fully down (or the flap fully open), with a little cable slack?
- No: the cable is too tight and holds the choke partly on. Adjust it. Turn the bars lock to lock: the cable must not pull the choke on.
- Yes: go to step 4.
4Is the lever stiff or does it slide back on its own?
- Yes: oil the cable (Lubricate control cables) and check the lever's friction washer or spring. Replace a broken lever.
- No: go to step 5.
5Cable and lever work correctly, but the choke still has no effect, or the engine still runs rich when warm?
- Yes: the fault is in the carburettor starter circuit (plunger seat, starter jet). Check the choke or starter valve and, if blocked, Clean the carburettor.
Causes, most likely first
| Cause | How to confirm | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Cable too tight, choke partly on | No slack at OFF, high warm idle | Adjust cable |
| Cable too slack | Plunger does not lift fully | Adjust cable |
| Dry or stiff cable | Lever heavy or slips back | Lubricate |
| Broken or detached cable | Inner does not move | Reconnect or replace |
| Starter circuit blocked or plunger stuck | Cable fine, no effect | Choke check |
