You open the throttle and the engine speed climbs, but the bike does not accelerate to match. The engine is making power, but it is not reaching the rear wheel. Something between the engine and the wheel is slipping: the clutch, the automatic drive belt on a scooter, or (rarely) a chain or sprocket. This is not an engine fault, so do not start by tuning the engine.
Is it safe to ride?
With care, gently, to a place where it can be fixed. If you hear clattering from the chain, or the drive stops completely, stop: a chain that comes off can lock the rear wheel.
Quick checks first
- What kind of bike is it: manual clutch lever, step-through with no clutch lever (semi-automatic), or scooter (twist and go)?
- Manual: is there free play at the clutch lever?
- Is the engine oil level correct (manual and semi-automatic clutches run in oil)?
- Any clatter or grinding from the chain?
- Scooter: any smell of burnt rubber from the drive case?
Diagnose it step by step
1Is there any clattering, knocking or grinding from the chain or sprockets when it slips?
- Yes: stop. The chain may be jumping teeth or a sprocket may be stripped. See Chain jumps teeth or comes off and Inspect sprockets.
- No: go to step 2.
2Manual clutch bike: is there free play at the lever (K-Light 125: 10 to 15 mm)?
- No free play: the clutch is held partly open. Adjust clutch lever free play.
- Free play correct: go to Clutch slips. Check the oil level and type with Check the engine oil level, then worn plates: Inspect and replace clutch plates.
3Step-through semi-automatic (no clutch lever):
4Scooter with CVT (twist and go):
- Go to Scooter revs but accelerates slowly. The belt, rollers or clutch shoes are worn: Inspect and replace the drive belt, Check the scooter clutch.
- Engine revs but the scooter does not move at all: Scooter drive belt has broken.
5. Not sure if it slips? On a road test, accelerate hard in a middle gear: on a slipping clutch the revs jump up while the speed lags. On a weak engine both rise slowly together; then see Engine feels weak.
Causes, most likely first
| Cause | How to confirm | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| No clutch free play | Lever has no slack | Clutch free play |
| Worn clutch plates, weak springs, wrong oil | Slips with correct free play | Clutch plates |
| Semi-automatic clutch worn | Step-through, no lever | Auto clutch check |
| Worn CVT belt, rollers or clutch | Scooter | CVT belt |
| Chain jumping or stripped sprocket | Clatter, visible wear | Sprocket inspect |
