Oil and leaks

Too much oil in the engine

Ride with careAlso called: oil above the mark, overfilled sump, oil level too high

When the oil is above the upper mark, the spinning crankshaft whips it into foam, pressure builds in the crankcase, and oil is pushed out through the breather into the air box, past seals and into the cylinder, where it burns as blue smoke. The K-Light smoke chart starts with this check. Usually someone simply poured in too much, or read the level with the bike on its side stand. If the level rises by itself, something else is getting into the oil: fuel or coolant, which is a fault.

Is it safe to ride?

Yes with care for a short way if only a little high. Drain to the correct level before riding far. If the level is rising by itself, do not ride until you know why.

Quick checks first

  • Was the level read with the bike upright, on level ground, after settling?
  • Was the oil just changed or topped up?
  • Does the oil smell of petrol, or look milky?
  • Is the air box drain full of oil?

Diagnose it step by step

1Recheck the level correctly with Check the engine oil level. Is it still above the upper mark?

  • No: it was a reading error. Done.
  • Yes: go to step 2.

2Was oil added or changed recently?

  • Yes: too much was put in. Go to step 4.
  • No, it has risen by itself: go to step 3.

3Smell and look at the oil. Does it smell of petrol, or look milky or creamy?

4Remove the excess. Place a tray, loosen the drain plug slightly and let a little oil out, then retighten (or drain fully and refill the correct quantity with Change the engine oil and clean the strainer). K-Light 125: 1.1 ± 0.1 L at an oil change.

  • Check again after settling. Repeat until correct.

5Did oil reach the air box or filter?

6After a short ride, is there still smoke or an oil leak?

Causes, most likely first

Cause How to confirm Fix
Level read wrongly Side stand, not settled Check the engine oil level
Too much added Recent top-up Drain to correct level
Fuel in the oil Petrol smell, thin Oil smells of petrol or the level rises
Coolant or water in the oil Milky Oil is milky or creamy
