Scooter automatic drive (CVT)

Scooter will not reach its normal top speed

OK to rideAlso called: scooter slow at the top, scooter lost top speed, CVT not shifting up

On a flat road with the throttle fully open, the scooter tops out well below its usual speed. Two kinds of fault cause this. Either the engine is not making its power (then the revs are low too), or the automatic drive cannot reach its "top gear" position: a worn, narrow belt sits too low in the front pulley, worn rollers do not push the pulley fully closed, or the rear pulley sticks. Listening to the engine revs at top speed tells you which. For limits and settings, follow your scooter's manual.

Is it safe to ride?

Yes, in most cases. If the scooter also struggles to keep up with traffic, avoid fast roads until it is fixed.

Quick checks first

  • Check tyre pressures and that the brakes do not drag.
  • Was anything changed recently: belt, rollers, exhaust, air filter?
  • Ride on a flat road at full throttle and listen: are the engine revs high or low?

Diagnose it step by step

1Is a brake dragging or a tyre soft?

2At full throttle on the flat, are the engine revs lower than usual and the engine feels flat?

3Does it also feel slow to accelerate, with revs rising ahead of speed?

4Open the drive case (engine cold). Is the belt narrower than your manual's minimum, or glazed?

5Are the rollers flat-spotted, the wrong size or weight, or does the movable pulley half stick on its boss?

6Still slow at the top?

  • The rear pulley may be sticking, or its spring wrong. Go to Check the scooter clutch and bell.
  • Some scooters have a speed limiter or restrictor fitted for local rules; check with your dealer before changing anything. Removing a limiter can make the scooter illegal on public roads.

Causes, most likely first

Cause How to confirm Fix
Dragging brake or soft tyre Wheel hard to spin Check for brake drag
Engine short of power Revs low at full throttle Will not reach normal top speed
Worn, narrow belt Below minimum width Inspect and replace the scooter drive belt
Worn or wrong rollers, sticky pulley Flat rollers, stiff movable half Check variator rollers and sliders
Sticking rear pulley or wrong spring Belt and rollers good Check the scooter clutch and bell
