Scooter automatic drive (CVT)

Scooter creeps forward at idle or the rear wheel turns on the stand

Ride with careAlso called: scooter pulls at idle, clutch engages at idle, rear wheel spins on centre stand

With the engine idling and your hands off the throttle, the scooter pushes forward when you release the brakes, or the rear wheel spins quickly when the scooter is on its centre stand. The clutch in an automatic scooter should only grip when the engine speeds up. If the idle is too high, the throttle does not close fully, or the clutch springs are weak or the shoes stick, the clutch grips at idle. On some scooters the rear wheel turns slowly on the stand at idle because of light drag; compare with your manual or a similar healthy scooter. For idle speed and clutch settings, follow your scooter's manual.

Is it safe to ride?

Ride with care. Hold the rear brake at every stop: the scooter can push you into a junction. Do not leave it idling on the stand near people; the spinning wheel can catch hands and clothes.

Quick checks first

  • Does the throttle snap fully shut when released, at every handlebar position?
  • Is the idle faster than usual (listen, or read the rev counter if fitted)?
  • Did it start after a throttle body clean, a battery change or carburettor work?

Diagnose it step by step

1Does the throttle grip snap shut, with a little free play, from full left to full right lock?

2Is the idle speed above your manual's value?

3Does the idle stay high only for the first minutes when cold, then drop and the creeping stops?

  • Yes: many engines idle faster when cold. That is normal; hold the brake while it warms.
  • No: go to step 4.

4With the idle correct, does the scooter still push forward, or the wheel spin fast on the stand?

  • Yes: the clutch shoe springs may be weak or broken, the shoes may be sticking in the bell with rust or debris, or wrong springs may have been fitted. Go to Check the scooter clutch and bell.
  • No: the problem is solved.

Causes, most likely first

Cause How to confirm Fix
Throttle not closing Grip slow to return, no free play Adjust throttle free play
Idle speed too high Idle above manual value Adjust carburettor idle speed and mixture, Reset the idle after throttle body work
Cold fast idle (normal) Stops when warm Hold brake while warming
Weak or broken clutch springs Creeps with correct idle Check the scooter clutch and bell
Shoes sticking or wrong springs Workshop inspection Check the scooter clutch and bell
