These safety switches stop the engine starting or running when it could make the bike move unexpectedly. The side stand switch sits at the stand pivot. The clutch switch sits in the clutch lever. The neutral or gear position switch screws into the left side of the gearbox. Scooters and many electric bikes use a brake lever switch instead of a clutch switch.
What it does
Typical logic: the starter works only in neutral, or in gear with the clutch pulled; and if the side stand is down while a gear is selected, the engine cuts. On the K-Light the starter relay earth runs through the clutch switch, or through the neutral switch via a diode, and the ECU also reads clutch, neutral and side stand signals. The neutral switch also lights the green N lamp. Switches get dirt, water, rust and bent tabs; wires break at the stand pivot.
Signs it is worn or failing
- Will not start in gear, on the side stand or without the clutch pulled.
- Engine dies when the side stand moves or the bike is put in gear.
- Nothing happens when I press the starter in neutral.
- Neutral light does not work or stays on in gear.
When to replace it
When a switch fails the continuity test after cleaning, or its body or tab is broken. Never bypass a safety switch; riding off with the stand down can throw you off on the first left turn.
What to match when buying
- Match make, model and year, plug and wire colours. Side stand switches can be normally open or normally closed.
- Neutral switches: match thread, sealing washer and type (single neutral contact or full gear position switch).
- Clutch switches: match lever type and plug.
Fitting notes
- Home job: Test the side stand, clutch and neutral switches; neutral switch: Test the neutral switch.
- A neutral switch in the gearbox lets oil out when removed; have a new washer and a tray ready.
- Check the stand itself: Check the side stand.
