Starting a screw in a tight spot is hard if it falls out of the screwdriver. A holder keeps it in place.
Options
- Bought screw holder. A sleeve or clip that slides on the screwdriver blade and grips the head.
- Paperclip holder. Straighten a paperclip, bend one end into a loop or a V and slide it along the screwdriver blade so that it holds the screw head against the bit.
- A rounded head. If a bit slips, put a little valve-grinding paste in the head. Make your own with coarse grinding powder in oil. The paste lets the bit bite. See Remove a rounded, seized or broken fastener.
Steps
- Choose a bit that fits the screw head: Choose the right Phillips bit for Japanese bike screws.
- Slide the holder over the blade and set the screw on the tip.
- Place the screw in its hole and turn it a few turns.
- Slide the holder away and finish with the screwdriver.
- Pull the holder out of the way before tightening.
Check your work
- The screw is started square and not cross-threaded: it turns freely for the first turns by hand.
