The twist grip turns a long way before the engine responds. Riding feels jerky: the power comes in late and suddenly, and smooth control at low speed is hard. Usually the cable has stretched or the adjuster has moved. Sometimes a broken strand, a worn grip tube or a cable end that has slipped out of its seat is the cause.
Is it safe to ride?
With care if the throttle still snaps shut and the engine responds. Fix it soon: jerky throttle control is risky in traffic and on slippery roads. If the cable feels like it is about to break, do not ride.
Quick checks first
- Measure the free play at the grip flange (K-Light 125: 3 to 5 mm).
- Is the adjuster locknut loose?
- Look at the cable ends for frayed strands.
- Does the grip wobble or click on the bar?
Diagnose it step by step
1Is the free play larger than your bike's value?
- No: the play is correct. If the bike still feels slow to respond, the fault is elsewhere (engine, clutch). See Hesitates or stumbles when opening the throttle.
- Yes: go to step 2.
2Can you set it correctly with the grip-end adjuster (Adjust throttle free play)?
- Yes: set it and lock the locknut. Check the idle does not rise at full lock. Done.
- No, the adjuster is at the end of its thread: go to step 3.
3Use the adjuster at the carburettor or throttle body end, then fine-tune at the grip. Can you get the correct play?
- Yes: done. Note the cable has stretched; check it more often.
- No: go to step 4.
4Look at the cable ends and the outer cable. Are strands broken, is the end ferrule out of its seat, or is the outer cable crushed?
- Yes: replace the cable (Lubricate or replace the throttle cable). See A control cable is frayed or stiff.
- No: go to step 5.
5Open the grip housing. Is the slot where the cable nipple sits in the grip tube worn or cracked, or does the tube slip on the bar?
- Yes: fit a new grip tube.
- No: on a bike with two throttle cables, check the closing cable is not too slack or tight as the manual says.
What happens if you leave too little play instead: the idle rises when you turn the bars and the throttle may not fully close. Always check at full lock after adjusting.
Causes, most likely first
| Cause | How to confirm | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Adjuster moved or cable stretched | Play over the value, adjuster has range | Adjust free play |
| Cable stretched beyond adjustment | Both adjusters at end | Replace cable |
| Frayed cable or end out of seat | Broken strands, loose ferrule | Replace cable |
| Worn grip tube slot | Nipple moves in slot | New grip tube |
