The bike ran well, then a new type of air filter, a cracked or replaced airbox, or a missing filter changed the way it runs. It may miss and pop, idle badly or foul plugs. The jets were chosen with the original airbox and filter in place. Change the air path and the mixture changes.
Is it safe to ride?
Ride with care and only short distances. A lean mixture can overheat the engine.
Quick checks first
- Is the air filter fitted, sealed all round and clean?
- Is the airbox cracked, and are the inlet and tube joints tight?
- Is a foam or fabric filter oiled correctly?
Diagnose it step by step
1Did the problem start right after the change?
- Yes: go to step 2.
- No: see Engine runs rich or Engine runs hot and lean.
2Is the airbox cracked, or is the air tube split or loose?
- Yes: replace it. Extra unfiltered air leans the mixture, and a bike with a cracked box may barely run. Replace a hard, shrunk air tube.
- No: go to step 3.
3Does the engine run better with the original filter and box in place?
- Yes: the jets suit the original air path. Go back to it, or re-jet: Check the mixture after changing the air filter or airbox.
- No: go to step 4.
4. Read the plug. Black and sooty: rich. White or burnt: lean. See Read a spark plug and choose the jet by throttle position.
5. Is the inlet blocked? Check the airbox inlet, filter and breather.
Causes, most likely first
| Cause | How to confirm | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Different filter or airbox changes airflow | Better with original | Refit it, or re-jet |
| Cracked airbox or loose tube | Visible split, popping | Air tube |
| Filter left off | Poor idle, runs better with it on | Refit filter |
| Blocked inlet | Rich, black plug | Airbox blockage check |
