A tool that grips a spin-on oil filter so it can be removed and fitted. Types include a cup or T-handle wrench that fits over the end of the filter, and a strap wrench.
What it does
It turns the filter without crushing it. A cup wrench is the best fit for the job. A small strap wrench works but can dent the side of the filter during fitting.
Signs it is worn or failing
- The cup slips or is rounded inside.
- The strap is frayed or no longer grips.
When to replace it
Replace it when it slips or damages filters.
What to match when buying
- The size of the end of the filter on the engine. Check the filter part number or measure it.
- A small strap wrench for tight places.
- Some engines have the filter inside the oil pan, behind a cover. These need the right tool through the cover.
Fitting notes
A filter that is dented slightly is usually fine. A badly crushed filter must be replaced. Screw the new filter on by hand until the rubber ring touches the base, then turn it by the amount in the manual. See Change a spin-on or paper oil filter.
