An inline fuel valve is a small plastic on and off valve that is fitted in the fuel hose between the tank and the carburettor. It is sold for lawn mowers and small engines. It is a low cost way to replace a fuel tap that no longer shuts off.
What it does
It turns the flow of fuel on or off. It has no reserve position and no vacuum control.
Signs the tap needs replacing
- Fuel flows but the tap will not turn off: Fuel is leaking or dripping.
- Float bowl fills with the engine stopped: Fuel pours out of the carburettor overflow pipe.
- A vacuum tap that cannot be repaired: Vacuum fuel tap gives no fuel unless set to prime.
When to use it
When the original tap is worn, no parts exist and a new tap costs more than the bike is worth, or in an emergency. Fuel taps are often costly. Many are riveted and cannot be rebuilt.
What to match when buying
- The hose bore of your fuel line.
- A valve made for petrol, not for water. Check the label.
- New hose and clamps to suit.
Fitting notes
- Fit it close to the carburettor, with the flow arrow towards the engine if it has one.
- Close it whenever the bike is parked. A bike without reserve needs more attention to the fuel level.
