A circlip is a spring steel ring that sits in a groove to hold a part on a shaft or in a bore. External clips fit on shafts, internal clips fit in bores. Piston pins use a wire type.
Signs it is worn or failing
- A clip that is bent, rusty or loose in its groove.
- A part with end float that was not there before.
When to replace it
- Replace a clip that is bent, weak or deformed. A new clip is cheap, and a lost clip can destroy an engine.
What to match when buying
- Shaft or bore size, clip thickness and type (internal, external, wire).
- Buy a few spare clips of the sizes your bike uses.
Fitting notes
- Sharp edge away from the thrust load: Fit a circlip the right way round.
- Use the correct circlip pliers and wear eye protection.
